Paid Family Leave Extended in Connecticut

On May 9th, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed legislation that modified the state’s existing Paid Family and Medical Leave program, which was signed into law in 2019. Under the new legislation, survivors of sexual assault will be allowed to utilize the program to take time off from work to seek care or to participate in the criminal justice process. Additionally, the new legislation also allows Governor Lamont the ability to enter into an agreement with federally recognized tribes in the state to authorize their employees to participate in the program.

Currently, employers with 50 or more employees in the state are required to provide the benefits of the Paid Family and Medical Leave program to their employees, however the threshold is also changing in a phased approach.

  • On January 1, 2025, this will apply to employers with 25 or more individuals in the state.
  • On January 1, 2026, this will apply to employers with 11 or more individuals in the state.
  • On January 1, 2027, this will apply to employers employing 1 or more individuals in the state.
